Echo? 1
Southern Beale has a good post up discussing Democratic wooing of the NASCAR demographic. While reading her excerpt from a Salon.com article on the topic, I picked up on this statement by Republican pollster, Whit Ayres:
“They tend to be disproportionately southern, disproportionately white and disproportionately male, which pretty well defines the core of the Republican Party.”
Didn’t Howard Dean face the full wrath of the Republican Party for saying just that?
One Response to “Echo?”
Celebrity Deathmatch: Kathy Griffin vs Jesus 0
Didn’t watch the Emmy’s so I don’t know how “censored” Kathy Griffin’s “Suck it, Jesus” remarks were or weren’t. Though I’m sure some will make it out to be, this is no first amendment issue. I fully support a private company’s right to “censor” content they fear will be offensive to a segment of their customer base. Readers from my old blog will remember that I voiced the same opinion when Border’s Books came under fire for removing magazines containing the infamous “Prophet cartoons” from its racks.
What I will note disapprovingly, is precisely who is praising the decision to cut Griffin’s speech. You guessed it, it’s by and large the same people who threatened to boycott Border’s for NOT displaying the offensive Islamic cartoons. A decision to cut content offensive to Christians is taking a noble stand worthy of praise, while a decision to cut content offensive to Muslims is a cowardly act of censorship worthy of boycott? More “free speech for me, but not for thee” by the usual suspects.

There’s nothing quite like happening to, as you take the last swig, notice that the expiration date on that bottled fruit drink you just purchased with lunch reads July 16, 2007.
Pink Slips; White House 0
Professor John Marburger, Bush’s top science adviser, has announced that he agrees with the rest of the scientific community that global warming is indeed man-made. All of you aspiring conservative “scientists” out there better start preparing your resumes. You know what happens to a White House adviser position when it’s occupant stops telling the President whatever he wants to hear.
This is Progress? 0
I was hopeful with a headline like this:
Bush to announce withdrawal of troops, official says
[...]Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in the country, told Congress this week he could see troop numbers sliding by 30,000 — which would reduce the number of troops to pre-surge levels — by July 2008.
Administration officials did not specifically say the president would use the 30,000 figure — but one said he would “make clear there are challenges ahead in Iraq, but also enough progress” to reduce troop levels.[...]
A bit of a let down. While this is being spun, even by the ?liberal? media, as some great progress, I can hardly get myself excited over it. We are in the 5th year of a war we were told would “last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months.” Can I be blamed if I don’t see the great progress in being told that, at some point in the 6th year of this ’six day war,’ we might, only might, be able to reduce troop numbers down only to the point where they were a few months ago.
We’re in Year 5. Saying we hope that just maybe Year 6 will look more like Year 4 isn’t progress.
Update: Meanwhile, Iraqis are still living in fear, actually worse than prior to the surge.

May I Be Cynical For a Moment? 0
Sorry, there will be no 9-11 porn here today.
If you’re interested in seeing gruesome images interspersed among American flags cheesily slide across your screen while track 4 off Wal-Mart’s “Patriotic Hits” CD drones on in the background of a 2 min Flash presentation you’ve spent the last hour and a half loading, you’ll have to look somewhere else.
If you are looking to fight about how 9-11 proves that Democrats or Republicans were, are, or always will be right all along and how anybody who doesn’t see it clearly hates America, point your browser to a different location and I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Find a new destination if you’re looking for a detailed recount of what breakfast cereal someone was eating hundreds of miles from NYC when they “heard the news,” despite having heard the story each year for the last 6, because let’s face it, unless you live in NYC or Washington (or perhaps Shanksville, PA), “where you were when…” is probably not that different from where you were on 9-10, and that really isn’t that exciting.
Perhaps that makes me a horrible, uncaring, sorry excuse for an American. On the other hand, perhaps it’s only reasonable to think that if, in 6 years, you haven’t recovered from the loss of people you never knew in places you’ve never been, you’re either suffering from a greater emotional problem, or are faking it to push forward some kind of agenda1.
